CNET published an interesting article earlier today about Google and privacy issues. It’s not the first such article by any means. Ben Edelman maintains a blog which monitors privacy issues at length. He’s written quite a few very good posts and articles on the issue.

Today’s article starts off by indicating that while Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google is quite private, you can discover a lot about him, just by “Googling” him. The article then mentions some of the details about him that the author discovered.

The point of the article is not to discuss Eric Schmidt, but to point out how Google collects data about you, and your surfing habits. Key point: If you don’t want Google to know something about you, then don’t use their toolbar, the email service, their search tool, or anything else they make. Everything collects data in some manner. Not all of it can be easily tied to you personally, but a lot of it can.

Contrary to rumor, the Google Desktop Search Tool does not track and report what’s stored in your computer. However, that’s not far short from what Google already knows about its users.
