Ok, the suspense as to whether or not my next post will be titled “What MSN Knows About You?” probably is not killing you. Heck, it’s not even going to approach 1% of the suspense you probably feel about the new Harry Potter Book.
Well, I’ve never read any Harry Potter books, but even that has more suspense for me. Surprisingly, I don’t even know if what my next post will be titled!
So, how did I get on this tangent? Yesterday I commented on Google’s privacy policy, and mentioned Yahoo and MSN. I ended up working until just after midnight, and didn’t get to read many news stories during the day, so today I started off with yesterday’s news. It’s all new to me, so why not?!? I ran across an article on PCWorld.com which quite ironically discussed how Yahoo has adjusted it’s Impulse software recently.
Impulse has been around for a few years. It uses a cookie to track the terms you search for in Yahoo’s search engine. It then prompts their software to display banner ads as you surf on the Yahoo network which relate to your searches, for a period of 48 hours after you run the search. It’s really no different from a Google Adsense banner, except that it’s pervasive - it will serve ads based on your queries for many hours after you have indicated your interests.
