Google announced plans today to raise in excess of $4 billion USD by selling 14.2 million shares of common stock on the public market.
In making this announcement, I’m wondering if Google is signaling an intent to make a series of interesting acquisitions aimed at broadening their revenue base and offerings without diverting from a search driven focus? Or perhaps they need a bit more cash in the tank to make one major acquisition which diversifies/ expands the company in a dramatic way overnight?
Their statement did indicate that no particular deal was driving this share release, but while no specific deal may be imminent, might one be evisaged?
As Andrew Goodman hypothesized, “is this just prudent hedging, ensuring long-term stability”? Perhaps they’re just going to bank some extra cash in case the market dives?
