Oracle has decided to enter the search engine market. At the beginning of March, the database company released Oracle Secure Enterprise Search 10g, a search engine software application that searches and indexes company corporate data.

Built on an Oracle database, Oracle Secure Enterprise Search 10g crawls and indexes a company’s private data, searching databases, applications, file servers, repositories, web portals and internal / external websites for fast, pertinent information retrieval for employees. It has authentication settings to specify access levels.

From the Oracle press release: “Today’s businesses face the challenge of reconciling the need for knowledge workers to quickly locate relevant information from diverse data sources, with the need to protect sensitive information. To address this, Oracle Secure Enterprise Search 10g has built-in functionality that permits users to see only search results leading to information for which they have authorized access. Specifically, Oracle Secure Enterprise Search 10g delivers direct integration with multiple user authentication systems, a hardened repository for storing the search index, a secure programming interface used to customize the search capabilities and high-quality search results”

Currently, Goggle does not offer a suitable type of corporate search.

Google To Hand Over $90 Million

Last week, Google agreed to pay out a $90 million lawsuit settlement to disgruntled advertisers that claimed to be victims of click fraud. Lane’s Gifts and Collectibles was the main plaintiff that filed charges against both Google and Yahoo!, alleging it, along with a number of other companies, was subjected to paying for bogus sales referrals through the search engines. Yahoo! intends to fight the allegations.

The $90 million will be distributed to advertisers in Google’s network over the last four years that have been subjected to inappropriate charges. A portion of the money will go toward lawyer fees.

Google makes most of its revenues off of its text based advertising links. Advertisers have also benefited greatly from a boon of commissions. However, click fraud occurs when malicious users force up advertiser fees by purposely clicking through ads without any intention of following through with purchases.

It’s time to implement more powerful analytics tools to help determine true clicks from false ones. I’m sure this is in the works.
