Danny Sullivan on Google as a Media Company

Some (too many) days I don’t get the chance to read Danny Sullivan’s postings. I probably only read a fraction of them, in hindsight, some I wished I had read sooner, just as additional background information to reference. Today I’m glad I did: the posting about Eric Schmidt from Google denying that Google is a media company was one of the better ones I’ve read lately.

He saved the best for last, and I quote;

Perhaps calling Google an advertising company might be less open to debate, since that’s the main product it sells — advertising. But given the billboard idea, I don’t think calling it a media company is off the mark. Google’s in the billboard business, filling up those that it owns (via software, its own web sites) and those it rents from others with ads.

Meanwhile, here’s one more jaw dropper from the

Q: Was your corporate motto, “Don’t be evil,” a direct response to Microsoft?

A: No. It had nothing to do with Microsoft. Larry and Sergey, and certainly I when I joined the company, spent almost no time on Microsoft. This is a press-generated focus. We don’t spend very much time talking about Microsoft.

Microsoft Cleartype

Today, I came across Microsoft Cleartype. What an improvement it makes; I definitely recommend it to anyone using an LCD.

Here’s the oddity – I only came across it because I was randomly surfing through bookmarks, and happened to visit SEO Black Hat. We don’t use any Black Hat methods in our optimization strategies, but we do keep up on what’s going on. Ignorance is not bliss. I flipped through the last couple of weeks worth of postings, and there it was.

The author of the post who turned me onto Cleartype made a very good comment. Cleartype has been out for more than a year (!) If it had been release by Google, Firefox, or Apple, it would have been widely covered, and “newsworthy.” But because it came from MSFT, it gets buried. That’s just not right.

I don’t believe that using the tool will positively or negatively affect your site’s search engine performance in any way.

Actually, most of QuadsZilla’s readers would probably love one of the features in the Enquisite tool. (plus a whole bunch of the features which are soon to be released). No, Enquisite’s not a Black Hat tool. But imagine being able to track independent changes in various search engine algorithms and performances better, and more precisely. That’s a tool everyone can use.

Wowjobs.ca Is Now Available

Looking for work in Canada? The latest statistics point to an employment boom all over the country. In Calgary, rumour has it there are three jobs for every qualified person. If true, that’s a pretty sweet deal. And in this day and age, is there a better way to look for a job other than on the Internet? I guess it depends on what you’re looking for and how well you utilize your resources. Personally, I’ve had some fair success with Internet job search in the past, and with search engine competition heating up it’s only going to get better for employment seekers, at least in this country.

Last week I compiled a bit on a new Canadian job search engine called Eluta. But there’s another Canadian job search engine that recently became available, called wowjobs.ca (currently in beta).

The first thing I’d like to mention about wowjobs.ca is the clean, uncluttered layout and sharp logo that incorporates the Canadian Maple Leaf. Nicely done.

Wowjobs.ca is not a directory or job posting site. Instead, it’s a vertical search engine that combs over 100,000 job sites for information. However, unlike Eluta which provides results from employer sites, wowjobs.ca indexes from Canadian job boards, classifieds and company sites.
