According to a story on CTV, Google is expanding it’s Google News search tool to include a lot more historical information. Until now, Google’s only shown information from the last 30 days. Now it will go back years, as it includes a larger database of information, which it appears will include LexisNexis and Highbeam, among others which do charge readers for full access to stories.
Google will not directly earn revenue for the sales referrals from increasing its database size (which is a significant cost), instead they expect to earn increase advertising revenues from the increased usage of its own site. Smart.
This is Google at its best. All the information, anywhere. Point Google’s clients to it. If they want to pay for it or not is their choice, and has nothing to do with Google. This is a smart decision on a lot of fronts.
