For most of the year, search engine optimization and marketing is a great industry to be in. Though the hours are long and the stress can be high, the opportunities for intellectual stimulation, challenge and growth are enormous. A career in search marketing is a full time job times two. Spiders never sleep and search engine results pages do not close for the holidays. That makes this time of year a bit different for SEOs and SEMs.
It’s been a tremendous year of change, challenge and diversity in the search marketing sector. Hopefully the tech world will find a little down time in the coming week. Unfortunately, for most techs in the search marketing world, downtime tends to mean five hour days instead of ten hour days.

Google gave the SEO world a bit of a holiday surprise this week with what appears to be a fairly significant data refresh and many SEOs are reporting fluctuations at Yahoo today. Both situations will motivate search marketers to do more than glance at their monitors in the coming week.
Also, Yahoo’s Panama platform is now fully rolled out. Many search marketers will be spending the days following Christmas upgrading clients from the previous YSM to the new interface in order to get a jump on the post-holiday period.
One of the keynotes of 2006 was a sense of urgency on the part of the search sector. This year saw a wave of change in search and social media and a massive push has been on to understand and learn to use dozens of new or emerging tools. While it has been a tremendously fun year, most people in the industry report they are working harder than ever. I do not see anything on the horizon, including worries about a lagging economy, lightening the work load anytime soon. In fact, I think 2007 is going to be even more intense as the search marketing sector further fragments due to specialization.
All in all, these are extremely interesting times to live in, especially if you work in the tech sector. On behalf of the crew at Metamend and also, the fine folks over at Enquisite:
Best to everyone this holiday season. Try to find time to take a break, at least for two long weekends. Here’s to a peaceful and profitable New Year.
