A security patch issued by Microsoft on Tuesday has had the inadvertent effect of crippling computers which are also running the free Zone Alarm malware protection package. When installed, a bug in the security patch prevents the computer from connecting to the Web.

Designed to plug a flaw in the Internet’s Domain Name System that allowed hackers to redirect URL requests to fake websites, even if the user entered the URL correctly, the patch (known as KB951748) appears to only affect machines running XP or Windows2000.

The common solution is to restore the affected computer’s operating system back to before the recent security update was issued. This problem is known to have effected users in the UK, USA and Canada.
