This is just a short post as an advisory to webmasters using the SiteMeter tracking code on their websites. A problem in the SiteMeter code, which has been fixed, was preventing websites using the code from parsing properly in the most popular web browser.
Wired magazine is reporting a significant (now fixed) problem with SiteMeter. According to Wired, since moving to a new server and making minor modifications in its tracking code, SiteMeter had caused websites using it to crash in Internet Explorer versions 5.5, 6.0 and 7.0. People trying to view sites that are using the code report messages saying the site can not be loaded.

Webmasters who removed the code reported their websites load properly in IE again. According to the SiteMeter blog:

We’ve identified and resolved two separate but related issues –

1 – IE Users viewing pages – The error occured when the SiteMeter tag was not a direct child of the body tag (e.g. if the tag was within a table or div). Recent changes we made created a failure for visitors viewing sites using Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 6.
