“So this comic and a mogul walk into a shoe store…”
If that sentence reads like the opening to a joke, it is. Yesterday, the world’s largest technology corporation, Microsoft, released the first of a series of advertisements it says will spur conversation about Microsoft products, services and advantages. Unfortunately for Microsoft (and fans of good advertising), the ad is sophisticated but pointless.
Far from pointing out the differences between Microsoft products and those made by rivals, the ad shows Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld talking about discount shoes. There are a few hilarious (and progressive) moments such as Uncle Bill’s obvious approval of pleather in place of leather but humour aside, the ad is basically about… nothing.
Struggling to find something in pop-culture as an anchor for my thoughts, I recall how the Seinfeld TV show was basically about nothing. Perhaps Microsoft is trying to steal a page from Seinfeld’s enormously successful but entirely blank script-book.
This is the first of a series of ads rumoured to cost about $30million. Hopefully a hint of creative information will leak into subsequent ads.
