Because any successful SEO (Search Engine Optimization) campaign involves a number of different steps and often includes many complex variables, it can be difficult and confusing to understand many of the topics that blogs such as these cover. So, perhaps its time we got back to some of the basics that all reputable SEO service providers follow and in terms that anyone who is looking to increase there online marketing can relate to.

The basics of SEO are actually quite simple in that your goal is to make your website as search engine friendly as possible. This just means that you want search engines to recognize your site quickly and easily anytime someone conducts a search that is related to the products, services or information that your business provides. The first two things that must be done to accomplish this goal is to ensure that the content on your site contains the right keywords and phrases that a search engine recognizes and that it is original and of high quality. The reason these first two steps are so crucial is because search engines read each site (and page) via electronic spiders and record that information within their database. Of course the way this is done is the technical side of SEO and unless you are a professional webmaster or service provider, there is no reason to peel back those layers.

The next thing spiders do can be compared to what any person who has reached your site expects – the ability to get around and maneuver from page to page within the website quickly and easily. A well designed navigation menu will accomplish this for both users and spiders. A spider depends on text links that lead to important sections and/or pages of the site. Of course search engines such as Google also welcomes advanced XML based sitemaps but once again, unless you are a webmaster or service provider, you do not have to worry about the specific technical details.

Some of the first things that a search engine looks for on your website are its URL, the site title and the description Meta tag. These elements can also be explained in more simplistic ways so that site owners have a better understanding of the basics steps that every SEO campaign should include. In future blogs, we will break down these and other important topics such as, online brand protection and reputation management, to their basic components.
